Amelie ****

Quintissentially French from start to finish, this is a brilliant, feel-good fantasy in which the young waitress of the title decides to secretly do good turns for people, before coming to realise that she is starting to neglect her own needs.

In terms of style, this film would never be made by Hollywood but its happy ending and enormous sense of energy have made it a hit around the world. Some of the more typical Gallic touches include a bizarre but hilarious narration and Amelie's occasional direct-to-camera: such as when she explains how she goes to the cinema to watch the people rather than the film.

The film even, quite subtly, touches on some very serious issues - in particular, the morality of what Amelie is doing, the difference between beauty and attraction, and the nature of true love. Definitely one to see again and again.
