What do you do?
The Oscar Film Unit is a society dedicated to making films. That's right films, the things you see at the cinema - not dreadful 'home video howlers' you see on 'You've Been Framed'. If you've ever thought "I could do that" or even "I could do better than that" then we're probably the society for you!
You do not need any previous experience to join! We're all amateurs, too!
What sort of films do you make?
We're prepared to tackle any type of film. If you have an idea, come along and suggest it. Try not to be over-ambitious! Making a film can be harder than you think, especially if you are running to a tight budget. The majority of our films do not exceed 20 minutes. The main point of making them is that the people involved have fun.
How do I make my own film?
First write a script (for ideas have a look at the scripts archive). Second Join. Third work out what kind of people you will need to help you (directors, actors, camera men etc) then come to a meeting and assemble your team, or alternatively send an email to our mailing list ofu_members@egroups.com. Finally once you have your team assembled you can book the camera and begin to film your project.
But how do I book the cameras/ lights/tripod/editing suite etc? The cameras, lights, tripod, and editing equipment etc are handled by the booking officer. If you want to use the editing suite first you will have to be trained, we have regular training sessions.
How can I work on someone else film?
Come along to one of the meetings and ask around there, are normally lots of jobs available. Or alternatively look at the current projects page, find a script you like, the filled places on the team will be listed, and then email the writer and ask them what you can do to help. Jobs required are often emailed out on the email list ofu_members@egroups.com. You could also send out an email to this list offering your help and skills. The email list is online at: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/ofu_members
How do I join?
Simple, new members are always welcome, just come along to one of the meetings and find out more. Or email Matthew (chair@ofu.org.uk) or Paul (treasurer@ofu.org.uk). It's free to join.
When and where do you meet?
The Oscar Film Unit meets at 7.00pm on Tuesdays in LTH. Tuesdays tend to be spent either planning filming (which usually takes place at
weekends) or just brainstorming (read drinking) in the pub. Sometimes we are so talented we can do both at once. Weekend filming and other notable events will be advertised on the main page and on the email
list: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/ofu_members
Do you have a script writing template for word?
Click Here to download the Word script writing template (courtesy of Wessex Films - link http://www.soton.ac.uk/~sufu).
What else do you have?
We also own a limited number of props (including the essential inflatable shark) and that staple of all Hollywood greats -- the clapperboard!
We have our own analogue non-linear editing equipment, but hope in the near future to upgrade this and our camera to digital equipment. We will hopefully also have a certain amount of use of AVS' Television Studio. Oscar Film Unit does own equipment for filming and editing 16mm and 8mm films and we hope to make use of this every year.
What happens to the finished films?
Most of our films end up being premiered in a festival held once a year before the end of the spring semester. The festival showcases all of the years work plus some from other universities from around the country. What happens next is largely up to you. If a film is good enough, it could be entered into a national or international competition.
When are you showing Jurassic Park?
If you want to watch other people's films, then you're in the wrong place. The Oscar Film Unit is not to be confused with Surrey Student Cinema which is another society entirely.
